Tourist information on the go with GOSS Mobile Web

Tourists can get top tips and detailed information on the go with a new mobile website launched to promote South Tyneside.

A recent survey by TripAdvisor revealed a third of British travellers used mobile devices to plan their holidays in the last year1. This fact has reinforced the case for South Tyneside Council's timely launch of a destination focused mobile website.

The mobile website provides details of tourist attractions, events, accommodation, places to eat and drink, and special offers. When a web user searches for the site, it automatically detects whether they are using a mobile phone or a PC and displays the correctly formatted version.

Roger Abbott, Principal Web Officer, South Tyneside Council said:

"By working with GOSS Interactive on innovative methods of engagement, we are able to promote South Tyneside and our tourism industry to visitors. The mobile website offers practical information that visitors need when they are out and about or planning their trip."

South Tyneside Council, who developed the mobile site, recently received 4 stars (out of 4) from Socitm for the performance and usability of their main website. For their mobile site they chose the GOSS Mobile Web solution.

Mr Abbott added:

"With TripAdvisor reporting 1/3 of British travellers using mobile devices to plan their holidays, and 1/2 UK residents using a Smartphone to access the web daily2, we knew there was a strong need for a mobile website. We have been able to quickly launch GOSS Mobile Web, utilising our existing Web Content Management system, GOSS iCM. The fully-featured, low cost mobile site shares content with our main site and requires minimal training for staff. This has given us exceptional return on investment."

Tourism is worth more than £200 million a year to South Tyneside, which attracts more than five million visitors every year. To view the mobile website, please click here.
