Over the last 12 years a vast amount has changed, perhaps most strikingly with the impact of social media that really foster online communication. For brands to embrace all the marketing opportunities the internet offers, they must ensure they have a really clear understanding of how and why consumers behave a certain way online.
eCircle commissioned an in depth three part study to gain a better understanding of whether social media is really replacing email as the dominant form of communication, how different channels are used for different types of communication and how different demographics and regional factors affect this.
The research is due to play a key part in the discussion over the course of the ConnectEurope Conference. The first part of Social Media research created in partnership with Mediacom has already revealed that brands failing to harness the combined power of email and social media. The initial findings from the second report that compared the UK with five of the biggest markets in Europe – Italy, France, Germany, Holland and Spain – have uncovered significant regional differences.
Here are a few select findings from part one of the study to utilise in your social media strategy:
• 38% of Twitter users and 27% of Facebook users utilise these platforms to learn about products and companies.
• There is a strong overlap between the number of people who can be reached through email newsletters and social media marketing, with 56% of internet users accepting marketing message via both these channels.
• Almost one fifth of internet users (18%) can only be reached through newsletters. 56% of fans and followers of company / brand profiles are also reached by newsletters.
• Only a small proportion of users (8%) have used the "Share With Your Network" (SWYN) feature in emails to share the contents with their private networks. But at 18%, the proportion of Twitter users who have used this feature is significantly higher than average.
